Earlier this year, British retailer Debenhams >became the first major department store in the United Kingdom to sell the traditional hijab.
While Muslim women have hailed the move as a positive step towards inclusion in the fashion industry, not everyone agreed...
Tommy Robinson, former leader of a far-right street protest movement, considers that the shop is "promoting [the] slavery of women"
This week, the British writer criticized Debenhams' for catering to Muslim women and accused the retailer of "promoting [the] slavery of women".
He snapped a photo of the modest clothes and headscarves sold at the shop, after which he shared it on Twitter with a caption that reads, "Debenhams in Birmingham. Promoting the Slavery of women."
As is the fate of most Islamophobes online, Robinson was both mocked and criticized.
People quickly called him out for feeding into the "Muslim women are oppressed" stereotype and completely disregarding the fact that many Muslim women choose to wear the hijab out of free will:
Looks like he's missing out on all the powerful hijabis out there
There is no shortage of powerful women who wear the Islamic headscarf - from Dr Amal Al Qubaisi, Chairperson of the UAE Federal National Council, to Amani El-Khatahtbeh, the Jordanian Palestinian behind >Muslim Girl, a platform for Muslim women in the United States.
*Infinite face-palms*
Slaves? More like queens
"How dare women not show more skin, tsk"
Hijabis want to go Eid shopping there
Time for a small history lesson
Jokes aside, did he forget that Muslim women aren't the only ones to cover up?
The "poor old Queen" fancies headscarves ... Is she a slave too?
What about these nuns?
Does "freedom of choice" ring a bell?
This is nothing but inclusive marketing
Not a shocker coming from the author of anti-Muslim books
Robinson is known to be one of Britain's most prominent critics of Islam, having penned controversial books in which he shares his one-dimensional views on Islam.
In Easy Meat, he "argues that at the heart of [...] Islam is a motivation to rape everyone".
While in Mohammed's Koran: Why Muslims Kill for Islam, he attempts to interpret Islam's holy book, The Qur'an, despite not speaking Arabic and having no academic credentials on Islam.
