Egypt won big at the eighth edition of the Handball Youth World Championship, beating Germany 32-28 in a final game that took place in Macedonia on Sunday.
The under-19 team's victory is quite historic given they are the first non-European group to achieve the feat. This is also the first time Egypt takes home a trophy from a U-19 World Championship.
The team ultimately made it to the event's final round after winning over Portugal during the semi-finals. Team member Ahmed Hesham was >named the international tournament's best player and teammate Hassan Walid Ahmed won the top scorer award with 51 goals.
The team's triumph is considered the biggest handball win for the country since its national U-21 team won the world title back in 1993. Back then, the tournament was set in Cairo.
Overall, 2019 has been a great year for Egypt at the International Handball Federation (IHF) tournaments. In July, the country's U-21 team won the bronze medal at the 2019 IHF Men's Junior World Championship after beating Portugal 37-27 in the third-place playoff.
Following the U-19 team's historic win this week, Egypt's President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi praised the team's "heroic performance throughout the tournament."
Egyptian celebs and sports stars - including the country's very own football legend Mohamed Salah - congratulated the team on Twitter.
