Couples beware: WhatsApp will now tell users when their messages have been read, so no more excuses about forgetting to pick-up dinner or planning a girl’s night when he said he wanted to take you to the movies.

Although it might seem that this service already exists on Whatsapp, prior to the update, users could only see whether a message had been sent or delivered, not when it’s been read. Now, after a message is read, it will appear with two blue checks next to it, as seen below.

How much this changes the Whatsapp experience remains to be seen. Users were always able to identify the last time an account was active on the messaging service and from there, could easily infer that a person saw their message and decided not to respond.

Both Blackberry’s BBM and iPhone’s iMessage offer a similar read receipt program although users can opt out of the service.
