In a plea for the whole world to come together to "treat women like expensive food," Jon Stewart took on the Miss Universe selfie controversy surrounding Miss Lebanon and Miss Israel on 19 January.
For those of you living under a rock, Miss Lebanon, Saly Greige, and Miss Israel, Doron Matalon, appeared in an Instagram photo together last week on Matalon's social media account. The story made waves in regional and international media, as spokespeople called for Miss Lebanon to be decrowned for consorting with the enemy. Several Lebanese said that she did not represent Lebanon on Twitter, using an Arabic hashtag that translates as "A word to Miss Lebanon." The hashtag has been used around 7,000 times.
Griege defended herself saying that Matalon "photobombed her".
Some Lebanese pointed out that Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil appeared in a photo with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the recent Charles Hebdo Unity March in Paris, wondering why Bassil was safe from critique, while a beauty pageant contestant was found at fault.
Dubbing the series "Which Picture Is Upsetting the Middle East this Week?", Jon Stewart tackled the issue head on. See the hilarious results below.
