This weekend in Beirut all party-goers are invited to "Keep the streets safe with Uber," as the ride-sharing upstart is offering $1 rides on April 17th and 18th, between 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Uber Beirut has been trying to break into Lebanon since first launching in summer 2014. But, as one Uber MENA Executive admitted at the BDL Accelerate Conference in 2014, the competition remains stiff as Beirut already has a ride-sharing system called service taxis that have been around for over 60 years.
And now, the app is offering $1 rides this whole weekend. It comes closely on the heel of Lebanese celebrity Issam Breidy dying in a car accident late at night, so car safety is an issue is very top of mind for many Beirutis right now.
