In what may be one of the least surprising, but incredibly welcomed, moves, Twitter announced Wednesday that it would be opening an office in Dubai to serve the Middle East region.
While short on details - 140 character limit and all - the announcement was welcomed by MENA social media experts.
Speaking at the Arab Social Media Influencers Summit at Dubai’s World Trade Center Wednesday, Twitter Vice President Shailesh Rao said the office, which will be the company’s first in the Middle East, would open “soon.”
The company, which had more than 5.7 million active users in the Middle East as of last March according to the Arab Social Media Report, previously sold ads in MENA through Cairo-based representative Connect Ads. Rao did not offer any details on whether the relationship with Connect Ads would continue or what the Dubai office would be responsible for.
The announcement comes just months after LinkedIn opened an office in Dubai. Yahoo, who recently shuttered offices in Amman and, in 2013, in Cairo, has also consolidated its MENA workforce in Dubai.
