A young female Tunisian tennis player just hit a major milestone ranking in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) top 100 list, for the first time in her career.
Considered one the most promising Arab tennis players of her generation, Ons Jabeur had previously ranked 103 in the WTA rankings.
Other than Jabeur, Selima Sfar, a now-retired Tunisian player, was the only Arab woman to ever reach the top 100 list in 2001.
"The WTA is the global leader in women's professional sport with more than 2,500 players representing nearly 100 nations competing for a record $139 million in prize money."
A rising star in the world of tennis
Jabeur, who is hailed by many as one of the most skilled players of her generation, began her professional career at age 15 in 2010.
In 2011, the tennis player made headlines for winning the junior Roland Garros.
Since then, she went on to play in several championships, including the French Open earlier this year.
Competing at the championship in Paris, she made history by becoming the first ever Arab woman to make the third round at a grand slam.
At the time of her historic win, Jabeur said:
“It feels like history, of course... but me, I like to just stay focused on the victory so I can continue to make history even more. For me, it’s not over. It’s the beginning of my dream.”
Reaching this level in her career wasn't easy. This is because tennis is a difficult sport to get into, especially if you're an Arab woman.
However, the rising tennis star overcame every obstacle, from societal to financial and now hopes that her success will inspire Arab women everywhere.
