Just as Egyptians wait for Ramadan series and music every year, they also look forward to the Ramadan TV commercials. Yes, that's right. In addition to the awesome shows to watch every night, even commercials are entertaining this time of year.
They have a habit spark discussion, laughter and criticism throughout the month of Ramadan.
Fighting over which commercial is the funniest or most creative has become a staple Ramadan tradition in Egypt, just like buying a new lantern. These nine examples are some of the funniest advertisements this Ramadan so far.
1. Al-Arousa Tea
Arguably the best advertisement this year, the Egyptian tea brand's ad keeps things simple but very smart. It plays on a familiarly Egyptian phenomenon: how Egyptians often ask ridiculous but hilarious questions to which they know the answers to already.
2. Nestle's Crunch
One of the most talked about advertisements of the year and perhaps the funniest, this hilarious advertisement also plays on an Egyptian familiarity. It puts a new twist on the evident generational gap between the young and their old relatives when they keep talking to them about what it was like back in the good old days. The 59 seconds have already provided a year's worth of memes.
3. Mega Triple Delight
This ice cream advertisement shows a young man in an office being transported to a magical vacation wonderland at the taste of the chocolate delight. Visually appealing, we wish that a bite of ice cream would take us on vacation, right now.
4. KitKat Egypt
This creative advertisement highlights the many moments in the daily lives of Egyptians that deserve taking a break from life, with a KitKat of course.
5. Etisalat Misr: Daily Social Package
With a shocking beginning, this advertisement creatively plays on our social media obsessed culture and its selfie-obsessed participants.
6. Lion
The Egyptian chips advertisement portrays a lion defeating other competing brands and despite its simple premise, is nonetheless amusing and enjoyable.
7. Etisalat Misr: The Genie is Better in Green
Apparently, calling out competitors is a theme this year. This controversial advertisement, which is a part of a series of Etisalat advertisements, has not only been praised for its humor and originality but for how it cleverly references another popular advertisement by competitor Vodafone Egypt, who is portrayed by the red genie.
8. Italian Square
The Egyptian real estate company Misr Italia has produced two hilarious advertisements to promote its New Cairo launch. They showcase a young man whose dog has forgotten him because he works too much and a father who missed his son's childhood.
9. Degla Palms
Another real estate advertisement, it's both funny and realistic as it pokes fun at the situation in which a young man wants to start his own business because his boss is taking credit for his work.
