Trip.com recently ranked the 10 most dangerous places for solo female travelers, and two Arab countries topped the list.
According to Forbes, the list comes as part of the launch of Trip.com's newest and 20th tribe, Solo Female Travel, and is based on a survey of female Trip.com users.
It ranks Egypt and Morocco as the top two countries that are the least safe for female travelers.
Egypt: The world's least safe country for female travelers
According to the survey, Egypt topped >Trip.com's list of dangerous places to travel mainly due to verbal/sexual harassment that women are often subjected to while on trips to the country.
Women surveyed noted that "Egyptian men can be aggressive... especially in crowded markets."
One visitor explained that her “female guide would not visit the markets because the merchants would harass her mercilessly if (the tourists) didn't stop at their stalls.”
Others also noted that it's extremely important for women to respect the country's dress code because “attracting attention, especially for clothing, can be very uncomfortable.”
Terrorist threats are another reason why Egypt is considered unsafe for tourists in general.
According to Forbes, the U.S. Department of State has issued a stern warning to travelers who are planning to visit the country.
"A number of terrorist groups, including ISIS, have committed multiple deadly attacks in Egypt, targeting government officials and security forces, public venues, tourist sites, civil aviation and other modes of public transportation, and a diplomatic facility," the warning read.
However, Trip.com's editorial director Julie Pond doesn't advise people to avoid traveling to the country altogether.
"Egypt is interesting in that a lot of people actually advise you not to travel there solo at all. That being said, there are plenty of people who do and don't have problems — Egyptians can be really hospitable," she says.
Pond also points out that "although Egypt was the lowest rated country, it was still rated 5.5 on a scale of 1 to 10, indicating that it has some risk, but Trip.com female users did not feel that it was a no-go."
Morocco came in second
Coming in second on the list is Morocco.
Similar to Egypt, female tourists often face harassment in the country.
This is why many who were surveyed noted that it's best to "dress conservatively; cover up shoulders and legs," while on tours.
Others also warned that it's best for women to stay in groups while shopping because "shop owners can be aggressive and don't like to take no for an answer."
Also similar to Egypt, the country isn't considered safe for tourists of both genders due to terrorist threats and high crime rate.
According to the U.S. State Department, there's a "high potential for terrorist violence against U.S. citizens," who visit Morocco.
The State Department "also warns that crime — aggressive panhandling, pick-pocketing, purse-snatching, street robberies, burglaries — is a serious concern, particularly in major cities and tourist areas."
Other countries featured on the list include Jamaica, India, Peru, Bahamas, Columbia, Ecuador, Turkey, and Guatemala.
