Nevine Loufty, the CEO of Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank's Egyptian unit, was found murdered in Cairo on Tuesday.

The Egyptian national, who was credited as the first ever female CEO of an Islamic bank, was found in her 6th of October district home with multiple stab wounds, according to reports

A forensic team arrived on the scene shortly after the murder and a full investigation is underway.

"We can confirm that ADIB’s CEO in Egypt Nevine Loutfy has passed away," the bank told Arabian Business.

"We offer our deep condolences to Nevine’s family and colleagues."

Chairman of the Egyptian Federation of Banks Hesham Ezz Al Arab said: "Our world is poorer today," in regards to Loufty's tragic death.

"All of our members mourn the passing of a woman who was not just a consummate professional – an excellent banker and helpful colleague – but of a good, moral and positive human being who many of us were honored to call a personal friend."

Having graduated from the American University in Cairo, Loufty began her banking career with Citibank in Egypt in 1976. She had more than three decades of international experience that spans the United States, Europe and emerging markets.

As a female pioneer in the Islamic banking sector, she stood at the head of a growing trend. Globally, the industry will require one million professionals worldwide by 2020 according to Bloomberg. The market is also seeing a a surge in women studying Islamic banking in the past few years.
