If you're a Red Bull junkie in Sharjah, your wings have just been clipped.
The government of Sharjah issued a complete ban on the sale of and mixing of energy drinks with other beverages at all restaurants and cafes within the emirate.
According to Gulf News, Dr. Rasha Al Qasimi, assistant director-general of public health and central laboratories for the Sharjah Municipality said the sale, display or mixing of energy drinks at all restaurants, cafeterias and outlets that sell juice has been banned.
Energy drinks contain high levels of sugar, caffeine, and taurine, leading many doctors to advise they should only be consumed in conservative amounts by healthy individuals. Those with heart problems and adolescents are always advised to avoid consuming energy drinks.
Sharjah had been cracking down on energy drinks previously. An existing age restriction for their sale was already in place. Standards have also been implemented for where the drinks can be displayed in stores.
For the time being the municipality has said the drinks would remain available in grocery stores and supermarket chains.
