You know you're dealing with a serious issue when the king orders you to be hospitalized because of your weight.
That's exactly what happened to 610-kg Khalid Bin Mohsen Shaeri of Saudi Arabia in Aug. of 2013. Only in his late teens, Shaeri reportedly hadn't left his bed in 3 years.
When he was taken to the hospital it took a forklift to get him in the aircraft that transported him.
But now, after 2 years of an intensive medical program combining surgery, nutrition and rehabilitation, Shaeri has seen his weight fall to a manageable 120 kg.
"Khaled is in a good condition now after reach 120 kg and he can move much better…he will return to his home and practice a normal life soon," Ahmed Hikmi, Shaeri's lead doctor, said according to Emirates 24|7.
According to CNN Shaeri remained positive throughout the ordeal and was nicknamed "the smiling man" by his doctors.
Hopefully Shaeri's story will inspire others in Saudi Arabia struggling with obesity. A 2013 study suggests that about 30 percent of the kingdom's population is obese.
