Saudi Arabia has reached agreements with "specialized companies" to install security cameras in the kingdom's more than 95,000 mosques.

"The project is still in the experimental stage and we have reached agreements with specialized companies to cover all the mosques with surveillance cameras," Tawfeeq Al Sudairi, the deputy minister for Islamic affairs, said, according to Gulf News .

"There is complete coordination between us and the security agencies regarding the matter and as soon as the experiments are over, we will start covering the mosques with cameras. We will start with the most important mosques as part of the long-term project."

In order to monitor the immense amount of footage, a special operations center will be set up with direct links to all the mosques.

A recent string of terrorist attacks on mosques is being used as justification for the program.

Three mosques have faced suicide attacks since last August, killing more than 40 people and leaving many more injured.

Of course, while more surveillance may increase security, it's worth asking: what else does it entail?
