On Tuesday, Saudi Arabia's King Salman officially inaugurated the Haramain Express railway, connecting the kingdom's two holiest cities.

The train connects five different stations in Mecca, Jeddah, Medina, King Abdul Aziz International Airport, and King Abdullah Economic City.

The Haramain Express will travel at 300 kilometers per hour, reducing the estimated time of arrival between the kingdom's two holy cities by more than half.

Previously, a bus ride from Mecca to Medina was estimated to take up to six hours, but will now take just two.

"This generosity comes as an extension of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques' attention to transportation projects in the Kingdom," said Nabil Al Amoudi, Saudi Arabia's Transport Minister, according to The National.

A total of 35 trains - which can carry up to 417 passengers each - will initially operate eight trips per day. The first train is expected to depart on October 4 from Mecca, Medina, Jeddah, and King Abdullah Economic City.

Services to Jeddah's King Abdulaziz International Airport are scheduled to begin by the end of March 2019.
