Set in a quaint village near Batroun, Ghadi is a modern fairy tale. This Lebanese film charmed people at the box office despite being hit hard by piracy . A film by Amin Dora, this uplifting comedy, which was written by Georges Khabbaz who also starred in it, offers more than just entertainment. It brings up social issues such as the role religion plays in people’s lives, how individuals with disabilities are mistreated and misunderstood, and abortion.
Ghadi is now winning the hearts of a much wider audience across the seas. In October 2014 it won the audience choice award at the Busan International Film Festival . This earned it a review in The Hollywood Reporter and in Variety .
Ghadi’s winning roll doesn’t stop there. The Culture Ministry in Lebanon selected it as the country’s official entry for the Academy Award for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars next year. To date, no Lebanese film has managed to make the cut. So will Ghadi be the country's first film to be nominated? Let's wait and see.
