A pro-Islam campaign in America, launched by the popular blog MuslimGirl.net, is putting a different slant on the controversy over "drawing Muhammad" by calling on Muslims to draw the millions of Muhammads around the world – just not the prophet.
More than a decade after the Danish newspaper Prophet Muhammad scandal, cartoons that depict the prophet are still the center of plenty of controversy from Charles Hebdo to the recent shooting in Garland, Texas . Run by American activist Amani Al-Khatahtbeh, the new campaign called on her audience to “Help Pam Geller Draw Muhammad.”
The name of the campaign is a reference to "The Inaugural Muhammad Art Exhibit and Contest," an anti-Islam event and contest organized by Pamela Geller of the American Freedom Defense initiative in Texas to display the most offensive cartoons of Muhammad. Pam Geller, always keeping it classy .
“Muhammad is the most common name in the world, and chances are you know a Muhammad,” MuslimGirl.net said, adding: “So, let’s draw Muhammad. Let’s honor his diversity. Let’s celebrate his many different faces. Let’s elevate his humanity. In a bleak world where the Pamela Gellers are the ones with the mic, let’s shine some light on the good.”
While the media spotlight is shed on hate speeches of Islamophobes or extremists practicing violence and committing atrocities falsely in the name of Islam, MuslimGirl.net decided it was high time we fought back only with positivity.
“Draw a Muhammad in your life and post it on social media with the hashtag #DM2015,” announced MuslimGirl.net on April 27, adding: “Let’s help Pam draw Muhammad.”
