The United Nations Security Council condemned Israel's settlement policy on Friday, as it passed the first resolution against them since 1979.
The resolution aims to put an end to Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian territory. It demands that Israel "immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem," according to >Al Jazeera.
This would be the first time in almost four decades that a resolution of this kind has been passed.
"During this time, settlements not only continued to be built, but at an accelerated pace," Sherine Tadrous, Head of Amnesty International’s UN Office in New York, said in a statement.
However, despite the UN Resolution, Israel is expected to approve the >construction of hundreds of new homes in East Jerusalem, a move that is illegal under international law.
Still, many are hailing this as a symbolic victory for Palestine.
Calling it: "One of the most substantial policy decisions"
And "Symbolic, but important"
Because the settlements are the biggest "barrier to peace"
People are calling out Donald Trump
And criticizing those calling Obama an "anti-semite"
The Obama administration refrained from using its veto power, and abstained from the vote.
Netanyahu has accused Obama administration of planning the whole thing.
"From the information that we have, we have no doubt that the Obama administration initiated it, stood behind it, coordinated on the wording and demanded that it be passed,” Netanyahu said, according to the New York Times.
Many right-wing supporters have criticized Obama, accusing him of being an anti-semite and Israel's enemy.
