Ahed Tamimi has been indicted on 12 charges by Israeli authorities.

The prominent 16-year-old Palestinian activist was arrested in a raid on her family's home in the West Bank village of Nabi Saleh on December 19, 2017, after a video of her slapping and kicking two Israeli soldiers went viral online.

Tamimi was fighting back against the Israeli soldiers just moments after they had shot her 15-year-old cousin in the face with a rubber bullet, according to Al Jazeera

Although he survived the attack, Tamimi's cousin experienced severe internal bleeding and was put in a medically-induced coma for 72 hours.

During her Monday court hearing, Tamimi was formally charged on 12 counts. These include allegedly assaulting an Israeli soldier, interfering with a soldier's duties and two previous instances of stone-throwing.

At the time of the teenage girl's arrest, Bassem Tamimi, her father, confirmed the news on Facebook.

"Dear friends, Israeli occupation forces raided my home and arrested my daughter Ahed Tamimi. They beat us, searched our home and confiscated all our electronic devices, including cameras, computers, and mobile phones," he wrote.

Despite international calls for Tamimi's release, Israel has continued to detain the teenager, along with her cousin Nour, and her mother Nariman, who was arrested when she went to the police station to check on her daughter's status.

Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett has previously suggested that Ahed Tamimi will spend her life "in the prison cell," according to Daily Sabah.

The Tamimi family are prominent activists, regularly protesting against the illegal Zionist occupation of Palestinian land.

On social media, many have rallied to defend the young activist

She's a "real life wonder woman"

A critique of Western feminism ...

And an important comparison

Her land was taken, her people oppressed and killed ... and she's on trial?

Her "crime" is defending herself and her family

But her detention has sparked an international outcry
