The world is really following in the footsteps of American rapper Roddy Ricch whose Instagram bio reads "antisocial." With the novel coronavirus outbreak, the majority of people in the world have isolated themselves in a bid to restrict the further spread of COVID-19. So we can all safely say that we're feeling a bit antisocial these days.
But with music, self-isolation and limited social contact become less of a burden. And this is especially true when we're talking about hip-hop, R&B, and soul music. For years, researchers have suggested certain genres of music positively affects one's mood. A 2012 study found that people who listened to upbeat music saw an improvement in their moods over the course of two weeks. And we can probably agree that the aforementioned genres are pretty upbeat.
Each and every genre has its own benefits, so mixing and matching up your playlist is probably the smartest thing you can do during this period. As a start, you should probably consider mixing R&B, hip-hop, and soul music to uplift your mood this week. And you don't need to search for songs, we've compiled a list for you. Ready?
1. Roddy Ricch: The Box
Roddy Ricch, a rapper straight outta Compton, is not your regular artist. The 21-year-old has racked up over 1 billion total streams, has been nominated for "Best New Hip Hop Artist" and has graced "Artist to Watch" lists by Amazon Music, Billboard, and BBC 1Xtra.
Born and raised in the heart of Los Angeles, the American rapper grew up between his mom's place in South Central and grandparents' house in Compton before adopting the New Wilmington Arms projects as a second home during high school.
At a very young age, Ricch moved out on his own and dove right into making music. In 2016, the rapper uploaded his first single Ricch ***** to Soundcloud, and it caught fire — amassing 200K streams within two months. And then in 2017, he independently dropped Feed tha Streets mixtape. He's come a long way since.
His debut EP in 2019 titled Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial is the epitome of his journey. The viral track >The Box is the fourth single from the album and has enjoyed 11 weeks at the top of the US Billboard Hot 100.
"And I really wanna know, where you at, at?" the rapper says at the end of the song. Is it a coincidence that that's been the most frequently asked question during the COVID-19 outbreak? We think not and the answer among socially responsible humans is almost always "at home."
2. Don Toliver: Euphoria
Caleb Zackery "Don" Toliver is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. The Houston recording artist released his first major-label mixtape Donny Womack in August 2018. He gained massive popularity after the release of his May 2019 single No Idea, which took TikTok by storm.
Toliver gave his fans some extraterrestrial vibes after the release of his debut album Heaven Or Hell on March 13. The album was released under the Cactus Jack imprint, an American record label founded by rapper Travis Scott.
One track released as part of the album is Euphoria, featuring Travis Scott and singer Kaash Paige. The song lives up to its title, giving fans a little taste of heaven on earth ... till the end when hell begins to take over. Kind of like our situation on earth right now, wouldn't you say?
3. Lil Uzi Vert: Baby Pluto
Multi-platinum superstar Lil Uzi Vert recently released his widely anticipated album Eternal Atake, which has been enjoying the top spot on the Billboard 200 for the second consecutive week.
There have been talks that the album could very much score a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year due to its huge commercial success. One track released as part of the album is Baby Pluto, which has been dubbed the best song made since Lil Uzi Vert introduced one of his various alter egos aka "Baby Pluto."
We couldn't help but notice that some sections of the lyrics are incredibly fitting to the current situation.
"Man, we spray his car, spray his window, icky, icky," is one line that rings true for the many OCD fans who have been cleaning themselves and products with disinfectants intensely during this period.
Jokes aside, Eternal Atake is a concept album detailing the rapper's UFO abduction and his subsequent journey through outer space.
4. Kranium: Money In The Bank
Kemar Donaldson, popularly known as Kranium, is a Jamaican reggae and dancehall singer who rose to fame following the release of his 2013 hit single Nobody Has To Know.
