A Moroccan school is being accused of sexism after its officials expelled a female student for kissing a boy on campus. His punishment? Being transferred to another school.
The two were caught in the act in an empty classroom at a high school located in Miknas on October 27.
Soon after, school officials made the controversial decision to impose a more severe punishment on the female student.
According to Qushq news site, the girl admitted her 'mistake' and pleaded with officials to forgive her, but was nevertheless expelled.
"The expulsion destroys her chances of receiving formal education at any other government school," the news site wrote.
The case has sparked outrage on social media
News of the school's decision went viral on social media in the country earlier this week and immediately sparked controversy.
Before the case went viral, officials stated the decision was made because the female student had previously violated school regulations while the male had a 'clean record.'
Amid the intense online backlash, school officials are said to have backtracked on their decision to expel the female student.
Here's how the case went down on social media:
People were incredibly upset over the school's decision
"Only in Morocco... the girl is expelled, the boy is transferred to another school... because male privilege."
"Misogyny is destroying society"
"The punishment should be equal, they both made the same mistake, why be unjust?"
Many launched the 'bring the girl back to school' hashtag
Which also went viral...
"A kiss isn't a crime."
Leading officials to back down on their decision
"A salute to digital activism. People's refusal to accept this order led to authorities backtracking on their decision to expel the female student."
