Dubai's Court of First Instance recently ordered the deportation of a Lebanese woman who was convicted of carrying "nearly 2,750 medically-controlled pills at Dubai airport," Khaleej Times reported.
The woman's case dates back to July 2, when she was arrested and detained upon her arrival to the UAE.
In the early stages of the investigation into her case, the 23-year-old woman denied the charge of "importing psychotropic tablets" into the country.
During her trial, the defendant told judges she was unaware that the use of such medicines was regulated under UAE law, stating that she was carrying the drugs for her own personal use.
The woman will now be deported
According to Khaleej Times, the unidentified woman told the court she had been prescribed the medication after being diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), in the wake of her brother's death in a traffic accident.
However, given that she failed to present any medical documents in court, the defendant was convicted in the case.
"The presiding judge subsequently fined her Dh2,000 and ordered that she be deported," the English language publication wrote.
