Horsh Beirut reopened Saturday for the first time in 22 years, following a 4-year struggle by activists. Although the park definitely needs some loving attention after so many years of neglect, the opening of such a large-scale green space in Beirut marks a positive step for the city.

As the city remains buried in trash, a lush green oasis provides residents a needed escape from the cities often chaotic streets, creating a space for tranquil relaxation. We went to the park to take some pictures for those who couldn't make it on the first day.

Volunteers were scattered throughout the park to provide information and to help restore the park.

Faded but still waving, the Lebanese flag was posted proudly at the center.

Toward the center of the park, a more organized garden is being refurbished.

The park provides refreshing green surroundings and splashes of color as the flowers bloom.

Horsh Beirut is an ideal spot for families, couples and just those who want to relax for a while.

Horsh Beirut will be open Saturdays from 9 am to 7 pm, though organizers say they hope the park will extend its hours in the near future.
