Egyptian women are officially the best in the world at squash

Egyptian squash players are taking the world by storm, as the country becomes the first in 20 years to hold the top three spots on the PSA Women's World Rankings. 

Egyptians Nour El Sherbini (21), Raneem El Welily (27) and Nouran Gohar (19) have taken the top three spots in the ranking. 

Egypt's Omneya Abdel Kawy (31) made it to the Top 10 in the ranking, coming in at No 8. 

In 2009, El Welily won her first senior Tour title, which ultimately drove her into the world's Top 20. 

Soon after, she rose into the Top 10, after making the semi-finals of the Malaysian Open. 

2012 was the year El Welily's career took off in a big way. She won her first World Series title by defeating World No. 1 in the final in the CIMB Malaysian Open. 

In 2015, El Welily made history when she became the first Egyptian female athlete to occupy the No. 1 spot in any sport and the first-ever Egyptian to become the world's top ranked squash player. 

In 2009, when she was just 13 years old, Sherbini became the youngest world champion in the history of squash to win the women's title at the World Junior squash Championships (U-19). 

That same year, Sherbini won the British Junior Open Under-13 category as well as the Young WISPA Squash Player of the Year. 

Throughout the years, Sherbini has deservingly won several awards. 

In 2016, she became the youngest women to win the Women's World Championship which was held in Malaysia. 

Gohar lifted her first Tour title at the Prague Ope in December 2013. She then earned another title the following year at the Irish Open, just before her victory in the final of the Monte Carlo Classic - which pushed her into the world's top 20 for the first time. 

Her quarter final finish at the Texas Open in 2015 ensures Gohar would make it to the top 15 in the world. Three months later, Gohar became one of the world's finest young talents as she won the World Junior Championship. 

She then moved into the world’s top 10 in October 2015.

In 2016, Gohar became the second youngest British Open finalist of the modern era. 

Three Australian athletes, Michelle Marin, Sarah Fitzgerald and Liz Irving, took the top three places in the 1996 rankings prior to Egypt's major accomplishment.
