How an Arab woman acts, what she wears, and how she speaks are still top concerns for the misogynists who exist in our patriarchal societies.

A brief scroll down the comments iunder photos of female Arab celebrities is proof of that. These public figures are often insulted and shamed for everything they choose to do, simply because they're women.

Earlier this week, Egyptian actress Rania Youssef became the target of an online slut-shaming attack launched by trolls who insulted her for wearing "hot shorts."

From unacceptable offensive comments to tweets trolling her for her choice of outfit, many were unrelenting in their sexist reactions.

Thousands of sexist online users criticized Youssef for wearing "hot shorts," deeming her outfit "slutty" and "revealing."

However, there were many others who hit back at them, explaining that it's outrageous and unacceptable for women to be insulted over their personal choices.

The slut-shaming has to stop

How are comments like this still allowed?

"Your meat is cheap?"

Fear-mongering? "Your shiny thighs will burn in hell"

Many stood up for the actress

"You're strong Rania. Just like a man is free to wear whatever he wants, a woman is free to do that too."

"I wish everyone gets the freedom of choice we all deserve"

Not the first time Youssef is attacked over an outfit

In 2018, Youssef walked the Cairo International Film Festival red carpet donning a black leotard covered by a sheer overdress exposing her hips and legs.

At the time, her outfit stirred controversy online, which subsequently led to "public obscenity" charges >against her. The charges were later dropped but only after Youssef was forced to apologize over her choice of outfit on live television.

The actress appeared on MBC Masr's program Al Hikaya with Amr Adeeb and was publicly shamed for wearing the dress.

During her interview with Adeeb, Youssef was asked to promise she wouldn't wear such an outfit ever again.

Appearing uncomfortable and worried about the charges held against her, the actress tried to explain that the dress appeared to be too revealing due to a wardrobe malfunction.

Her appearance on the TV show sparked outrage among thousands who were upset over the way she was shamed for wearing the outfit.

Some found it ridiculous that such a huge deal was made out of a red carpet dress.
