The Dubai police force are well known for a flare for the dramatic and lavish with their fleet of flashy sports car and top-notch crime fighting accessories . However, they've decided to share the love a bit, rewarding safe drivers with the chance to win a free car.
Two lucky – and safe – Dubai drivers won free cars on Sunday as part of the White Points System initiative that began in 2012. In the past only one car has been given away but it seems that Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum was feeling extra generous this year with a surprise second car given away.
Emiratis Laila Mohammad Mubarak and Atiq Mubarak Al Sabousi were the luck winners. Laila will be given a Hyundai Veloster but the model of Atiq's surprise car has yet to be revealed.
“They called me from the traffic department and at first I did not believe them. I thought someone was playing a prank, but when he said my full name I knew it was true. I am very happy and the first thing I’ll do when I get the car is take my parents for a drive in it,” Laila told Gulf News .
Major-General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police explained to the Khaleej Times that the White Point System encourages safe driving and will help the department achieve its 2020 goal of zero traffic deaths within the emirate.
The system recognizes all drivers within Dubai who have no traffic violations recorded in the United Arab Emirates for the past year. This year, 1,500 drivers were recognized in total, all of whom will receive some kind of smaller prize such as complimentary hotel stays or cash gift vouchers.
Positive reinforcement to drive safely? We definitely like this initiative by the Dubai police. Let them have their lavish sports cars as long as they are keeping residents safe and sharing the love, they might as well enjoy the highlife on patrol.
