Children and teenagers across Dubai are weeping at the news that self-balancing scooters, or hoverboards, are now banned in public spaces throughout the emirate.

But probably everyone else is wondering why the decision didn't come sooner ...

No more dodging children as they swerve crazily around public spaces and sidewalks!

But on a serious note, the ban comes following several serious injuries and at least two reported deaths occurred from hoverboard accidents.

In an effort to avoid future issues, hoverboards are now banned in all public places including roads, residential complexes, shopping centres, pavements and walkways.

The boards can still be used in areas specifically designated for bicycles and skateboards.

And if you violate the new rules? Your board will be confiscated.

It's OK, kids. You can just stay in the present instead of being all "Back to the Future."

These "hoverboards" don't even really hover anyway ...
