Dubai is now the first city in the world to have its own Microsoft font.
Microsoft's first typeface to be created for a city was launched on Sunday by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed and comes in line with the UAE’s vision to become a regional and global leader in innovative digital technology, The National reported.
In a series of tweets, the emirate’s Crown Prince, who oversaw all stages of the project's development, explained that the Dubai font "reflects the heritage and culture of UAE and reaches out to the whole world."
The font was ">designed by Dr. Nadine Chahine in collaboration with a team from global agency, Monotype," Gulf Business reported.
Speaking at its launch event, Chahine said that the source of inspiration behind the design was "the openness and harmony of the people in the UAE, the essence of Dubai and its vision to become the quintessential modern Arab city."
After its launch, Sheikh Hamdan asked government departments to use the new font in all official correspondence.
"We are confident that this new font and its unique specifications will prove popular online and in smart technologies across the world. Therefore, we urge all government entities to use the Dubai Font in their official correspondence," he said.
The font was developed simultaneously in Latin and Arabic script and will now be available to 100 million Office 365 users around the world.
It is available in 23 languages, including Arabic and English.
