Dubai's "go big" strategy has reached new heights by approving the building of the what will be the world's largest concentrated solar power plant. Previously, the record was set by Morocco's Ourzazate solar power plant that was going to produce 600 megawatts by 2020; Dubai's is planned for 1,000 by 2020, and 5,000 megawatts by 2030.
The project is set to be located in the Mohammed Bin Rashed Al Maktoum Solar Park, made up of five facilities. Differing from normal solar power plants, concentrated ones focus on consolidating a large amount of solar power to a smaller surface area through mirror-like structures known as "heliostats."
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority announced the project will be part of Dubai's Clean Energy Strategy 2050, as it will reduce 6.5 million tons of carbon emissions.
