Another trilogy begins (or maybe not)! Mortdecai is adapted from Kyril Bonfiglioli's The Mortdecai Trilogy anthology from the 1970s. Directed by David Koepp, the film stars Johnny Depp, Ewan McGregor, Gwyneth Paltrow, Paul Bettany, Aubrey Plaza, Jonny Pasvolsky and Olivia Munn.
Expect mustaches galore.
There's a lot going on in Mortdecai as the official plot summary explains: "Juggling angry Russians, the British Mi5, and an international terrorist, debonair art dealer and part time rogue Charlie Mortdecai races to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain a code that leads to lost Nazi gold."
The film has some funny moments (with rather raunchy 18+ humor)...but sadly isn't especially riveting overall. Johnny Depp showcases his talent at bringing quirky characters to life and is a delight to watch. The rest of the cast also do a good job considering the honestly mediocre script. But all in all, it's the sort of film you watch either because you're a diehard Johnny Depp fan or have had a very hard day at work and need to unwind.
Interesting factoid: The version being screened in the Middle East has 8 minute cuts. The only country is the region with the complete, uncut version is Lebanon.
