In one of the most bizarre debates to ever go viral on Saudi social media, a Twitter hashtag sparked arguments over whether women should be allowed to wear jackets over their "abayas" (floor-length garments) during winter.

Yes, you read that right.

The hashtag, "Yes for jackets over the abaya" trended for hours after it launched over the weekend.

While it saw many react with offensive remarks stating that women shouldn't be allowed to wear anything along with the traditional garment, it also saw thousands of others hit back.

The now-viral hashtag had people tweet things like this:

"The aim behind this hashtag? This..."

And this...

"No, things are getting out of hand. Today, it's wearing the jacket over the abaya, tomorrow they won't even want to wear the abaya."

"Dear sister, why try things that will anger God?"

"Our poor women have become cheap commodities. Every secular, Western trend is sent their way. Clothes, fashion, showing off. Dear sister: God granted you the gift of hijab and religion. He made you a queen and a protected jewel. So why try things that will anger God?"

But it wasn't too long before Saudi women hit back...

"Are you even serious with this hashtag?"

With sarcasm that was just right on point

"Girls, please don't wear jackets, because they said so."

"Is this the only issue you debate every winter?"

Why is this even still up for debate anyways?

And "what's so wrong with wearing a jacket with an abaya?"

A few men chimed in as well...

"No, don't wear a jacket. Stay in an abaya and freeze to death or get a cold. And as for us, it's fine, we can wear jackets and pullovers. For God's sake, is this the rhetoric of sane human beings?"

"Wear what you want, it doesn't matter what people think"

"And here are a few gorgeous ideas for winter."

"Practice your personal freedom, may those who stand against it go to the North Pole"
