This region might not be at the forefront when you think of tattoos, but one Cairo artist is hard at work changing that, gathering artists from around the globe and regional aficionados for the Cairo Tattoo Convention .
The convention, which was first established in 2014 by Orne Gil, founder of the Nowhereland Tattoo Studio in Cairo, will be held this year on Nov. 6 and 7.
In the Middle East, tattoos are usually rejected due to religious and social factors. However, in the past four years Cairo has been witness to a rising number of tattoo artists and thus, Orne Gil has established the Nowhereland Tattoo Project. This project is attempting the "impossible" by working on bringing the unaccepted art to a variety of countries in the region.
Mentioned in the World Tattoo Events website as well as the New York Times, the Cairo Tattoo Convention is showing a lot of promise in diminishing the public notion and ideas that tattoos are "wrong."
The year's convention will featuring artists from Mexico, Italy, Jordan, Germany, Tunisia, and Egypt.
With great support, The Cairo Tattoo Convention is breaking taboos and have successfully created a sub-culture that aims to unleash a new round of diversity in art forms and styles.
