What's it cost to be No. 1 in Sharjah? A cool 18 million dirhams ($4.9 million), at least when it comes to ruling the road with the emirate's No. 1 license plate.

Businessman Arif Ahmad Al Zarouni won the plate Saturday evening at a auction held by Emirates Auction .

Zarouni wasn't playing around when it came to the auction:

“I attended the licence plate auction only to win No. 1. My ambition is always to be No. 1. I have no plan to win other numbers,” he told Gulf News, adding that he was prepared to win at any cost.

In addition to the No. 1 plate, 59 other plates were auctioned Saturday, fetching more than 50 million dirhams in total. Plate numbers 12, 22 and 50 were sold for more than a million dirhams each.
