Everyone is familiar with the standard forms of universal punishments and threats that plague kids all over the world: no TV for a week, no allowance for a month and having to do extra chores. But there are some things that only people raised in an Arab household can relate to. Get ready for a light spanking down memory lane.

1. The death stare

Behold, the look of death…This is a classic technique that Arab moms (and sometimes even dads) use. One long look followed by meaningful silence and the child instantly knows trouble is bubbling. Settling down and behaving is not an option, it is a must.

2. The killer pinch

This technique is used when the child blurts out something inappropriate and/or reveals hidden information in front of guests. The pinch usually targets any limbs within mom's reach.

3. The countdown from hell

One…two… two and a half… When the countdown begins, you have one option: “exit...stage left.”

4. The curved slipper

This is no ordinary throw. It’s a skilled technique with precision that even professional baseball players envy. The dreaded curved slipper is usually pitched by the mother and almost always hits the target: the naughty child.

5. Mouthwash with a kick

The most common way to remedy a “dirty mouth” is to use hot peppers or soap. One bad word and get ready to burn or to feel washed out.

6. This hand gesture

Most often accompanied with the words "halaa bfarjeek".

7. The dreaded spatula

A wooden spatula alongside a little game of tag.
