If you watch Lebanese television, you will find yourself bombarded with terrible melodramas and productions that are trying to depict "real-life situations" while failing miserably. Everything from the way these shows are shot, to the acting, is so far off from being real or realistic that these shows end up feeling like comedies to their viewers, rather than serious shows. There are certain things that are present in every single one of these shows.
If you were a character in a Lebanese melodrama, here's how your life would be different.
1. You'd wake up with full make up
How much cheaper would it be to wake up like this? Lebanese characters seem to have a natural contour and hair that just does itself while they sleep ... I wish I knew their secrets.
2. You would live in a beautiful villa, no matter who you are
Even if you have no job or can't afford it, if you have more than two lines on a Lebanese show, you will live in one of the most beautiful houses in the country. To be fair, it's not always villas, some poorer characters may sadly end up in a house with sea-view or an apartment in Beirut you wouldn't dream of ever affording.
3. You'd spend at least a couple hours every day thinking
The show runners need to fill their 40 minutes. With no plot whatsoever, you, as a character in the show, will find yourself having many pensive moments while heart-wrenching music plays in the background. Bonus tip: Try to find some wind to flow through your hair for a really intense thinking session.
4. You would drive a great car with no scratches or a license plate
Cars, like most settings in Lebanese melodramas, are completely perfect at all times. Everybody owns shiny brand-new cars in Lebanon anyway, right?
5. You'd always address people using their names
You need the viewers to remember the characters' names. So, every time you talk to someone, you must end the sentence by saying their name. Alternatively, you can end it by saying how they're related to you, like saying, "Aren't I right, friend?"
6. You would always have a love interest
No character in a Lebanese melodrama ends up alone, not even you! If you were in one of these shows, you'd always find someone interested in you, who you'd fall in love with in a couple of weeks ... and spend the rest of the season fighting for. And those are just the secondary characters, if you're the star of the show, you'll have at least two relationship prospects at any certain time.
7. You'd always know what to say
Every single character in a Lebanese show knows how to perfectly articulate their every thought like poets, because that's what normal people do. Sadly, in real life, our Arabic is almost always mixed with English and French. The fact that characters speak in perfect Arabic with words pulled straight out of a dictionary just sounds weird.
8. You'd always be going through a hard time
It doesn't matter if it's realistic or not, if you're the main character, you will go through every hardship known to mankind on the show. Don't worry though, you'll come out on top, of course. Writers keep putting characters in impossibly sticky situations just to get a dramatic response out of the viewer. And it's all at the expense of the poor character ...
