From architecture to business, to acting and sports, and even beauty pageants, here are eight times that Arabs beat all the competition.
1. Zaha Hadid (Iraqi-British architect)
Described by The Guardian as the "queen of the curve," Hadid was one of the most influential and prominent architects in modern history.
She became the first woman ever to receive the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004. She went on to receive the Stirling Prize, one of the world's most prestigious architecture prizes, in 2010 and 2011.
Hadid died in 2016, leaving behind an impressive and established legacy.
2. Carlos Slim (Lebanese-Mexican businessman)
Although Slim built his fortune in Mexico, the country of his birth, both his parents were of Lebanese descent.
While Slim remains one of the richest people in the world, he was officially the world's richest man from 2010 to 2013, according to Forbes. His current wealth is estimated to be about $54.5 billion, down from some $75.5 billion in 2012.
3. Ahmad Abughaush (Palestinian-Jordanian Taekwondo fighter)
Not only did >Ahmad Abughaush take home gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics, he also won Jordan's first-ever gold medal.
Competing in the 68-kilogram Taekwondo category, Abughaush was considered an underdog at the start of the competition. But he fought is way to the No. 1 spot.
4. Georgina Rizk (Lebanese beauty queen)
Back in 1971, for the first and only time, an Arab woman was crowned as Miss Universe.
Georgina Rizk proudly claimed the title for Lebanon, making her the universe's reigning beauty queen for a year.
5. Rami Malek (Egyptian-American actor)
Who doesn't love Mr. Robot?
Rami Malek finally got recognized for his stellar performance in the series, and his overall superior actings skills, when >he was awarded the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a drama series in September. He even beat out Kevin Spacey from House of Cards!
6. Oussama Mellouli (Tunisian swimmer)
He might be part fish?
Oussama Mellouli won gold medals at both the 2008 and the 2012 Olympic Games. But that's not all. Mellouli won World Championship gold in 2013 and 2009 as well.
7. Hassiba Boulmerka (Algerian runner)
In 1992, Hassiba Boulmerka entered the history books, winning Algeria's first-ever gold medal, flying past all the competition in the 1500 meter event.
In addition to being the first gold medalists for her country, she also became the first Algerian and Arab woman to ever win an Olympic title. She also won two World Championship golds, in 1991 and in 1995.
8. Tony Shalhoub (Lebanese-American actor)
The child of Lebanese-American parents, Tony Shalhoub won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor not once, not twice but three times in 2003, 2005 and 2006.
He won the award for his performance in the popular TV series Monk. Of course, he's won a slew of other accolades throughout his career, including a Golden Globe award for Best Actor.
