From Aug. 9 to the 13, the Perseid Meteor Shower is a must-not-miss. Peaking from Thursday to Saturday, it is considered one of the most extraordinary astronomical events of the year, with some astronomers predicting up to 200 meteors every hour.
Yet with thick smog coating Lebanon's skies – thanks to our skyrocketing pollution levels – stargazing can be quite a challenge. Fortunately, Lebanon is more or less a large mountain range, and there are plenty of ways to escape civilization and bask in the starlight.
Here are 8 places you should consider watching the Perseid Meteor Shower from, which are not horribly remote but affords you a wonderful view of the skies:
1. Cedars Ground Campsite, Shouf
Situated right outside the Shouf Biosphere Reserve, the Cedars Ground Campsite is an ideal camping spot, filled with the distinct scent of the cedar tree, and cool breezes. Join in on the fun by making your reservations at 03 938 187.
Situated 2,000 meters above sea level, this place escapes all of Lebanon's light pollution, making it an ideal spot to watch the meteor shower this weekend. I recommend you get in touch with Marc Finianos at 03 754 928 to make reservations at the camp. You won't need to get anything with you other than some snacks and drinks. The tent and campfire are included.
3. Falougha
On Aug 10, you can join in on the fun at Falougha for $30 in a limited attendee event in the mountains. Beirut Versus will be hosting another event on Aug 12 in Falougha for $15 per person. This event is open to the public.
4. Qaa el Rim
From this town in the Bekaa valley, you can see the lights of the city of Zahle glimmer below you, as the stars shimmer above. It is a spot unlike the rest in this list because the land here is more arid and the altitude is lower. Still, the Bekaa has a special charm that will surely enchant you in its own way.
5. Qornet Al Sawda
This is the highest point in the entire Levant region. At 3,088 meters high, you will not only watch the stars but feel close to them, too!
6. Ouyoun el Siman
This village in Kfardebian is probably one of the best destinations if you're looking for a budget night. All you really need is a sleeping bag and some snacks and you'll be good to go.
In collaboration with Lebanese Mountain Trail association, Tannourine Cedars Reserve is hosting a night filled with fun on Aug 12.
From an open air presentation about the phenomenon of meteor showers to a Lebanese dinner prepared by local hosts, it will be a magical night. For reservations, call 03 214 989 before Aug 10.
8. Arz Ehmej
Located in the Jbeil district, Arz Ehmej is a great romantic getaway. Here, you can rent a bungalow in the middle of unspoiled forests, cliffs and valleys. For more information, call 70 227 730.
