Flipping through magazines or window shopping may have served well for a while, but now online shopping and Pinterest boards are dominating the world of commerce. And now, straight from the Middle East, there is something even better for fashionistas all over the world.

Slickr, a Cairo-based fashion social network, is the place you need to be if you think in patterns and fabrics. While the idea of merging social networking with e-commerce has been available for a while in foreign markets, it is fairly new to Egypt and has yet to take off extensively.

Once you log on to Slickr, you have the option to follow users and brands, both local and international. And since social networking is all about dual interaction, not only do you get to like brands’ and users’ activity, but you can also purchase items directly off Slickr.

One of Slickr’s several perks, in my opinion, is that it is tailored to showcase everything fashion, including the quirky, artsy tastes one would usually not find in the stores. And the best part is, you get to explore the rising local talents of the field.

After snooping around Slickr a bit, I would say the following are the six most interesting showcased Egyptian designers.

With a focus on evening and wedding gowns, Cairo-based Deana Shaaban adds a dash of culture from the four corners of the world to her fashions. With an academic journey that took Shaaban through business administration, psychology, fashion design and patternmaking, there is a lot more storytelling to her gowns than just skillfully tailored fabrics.

Some people design accessories that tint the outfit with glamour, elegance and maybe a bit of cuteness. Unless you’re buying one of Nina Bakry’s designs, in which case you are buying a statement.

Bakry designs body accessories that occupy more body surface than the usual accessories. With a hands-on background in theater production, Bakry brings her theatrical feel to accessory designs.

Next time you want to channel your inner Greek goddess to your outward visage, you know where to look.

3. Fufa

Summer has arrived and nothing says beach time like boho-chic. If it’s boho-chic you want, Fufa might have just the right thing for you.

With a growing passion for colors, patterns and skillful craftsmanship, Fufa brings you 14 years of steadfast experience that started with her fashion doodles and family tailor visits when she was just 10.

Here’s one for the boys. While fashion is ever changing with new rising trends and styles each season, some people just aren’t that fond of change. Krak Baby is a lifestyle brand out of Egypt that brings the influential pop cultures of the 80s and 90s to a hip and fun twist.

And while they’re at it, why not turn every single TV icon to a pharaoh. Yes, we’re talking Pharaoh Popeye, Johnny Bravo, and even Bugs Bunny!

For those who believe that a bag is often a make-it-or-break-it item in their outfit, it may take them relentless scavenging to find the above-the-average bags that convey not only tasteful fashion but character as well.

Okhtein, an Egyptian brand introduced by the two sisters Mounaz and Aya AbdelRaouf, aims to present high-end bags in terms of quality and fashion at an affordable price.

6. UNTY

Fashion is often attractive for its visual appeal, but for some fashion creators, it communicates more than just bliss for the eye.

Each hand-drawn line that goes onto UNTY garments conveys a phase or state of mind.
