The Egyptian dialect is full of creative, amusing and sometimes absolutely ridiculous terms and expressions that are only ever said in Egypt . Just as hilarious as the words Egyptians invented are the words Egyptians use but actually have origins in foreign languages.
These words were embedded in Egyptian society after years of French and British colonial rule, they might have once been French, English or Italian words, but due to some hilarious mispronunciation transformations they've now become entirely Egyptian.
So Egyptian in fact, that Egyptians think these words are Arabic words, always have been, always will be!
1. Koshary - Origin: "Riz Caché"
You probably didn't see that one coming, but yes, the beloved Egyptian dish "koshary" was actually called "riz caché" by the French which means rice with other ingredients and it somehow the word transformed to "koshary".
2. Dereksyoon - Origin: "Direction"
Egyptians call the steering wheel "dereksyoon" which is actually "direction" in French which means direction. But Egyptians think it's just another regular Arabic word. Why? No idea.
3. Taraseena - Origin: "Terasse"
Many Egyptians call a terrace "taraseena" which was originally "terasse" in French. It's not exactly clear how that happened or why for that matter.
4. Kaboot - Origin: "Capot"
Egyptians call the car's hood "kaboot" which was originally the French word "capot" which means a car hood. Major face palm moment happening.
5. Feyash - Origin: "Fiche"
Egyptians call electricity plugs "feyash" which was originally the French word for plug "fiche". Close enough, no?
6. Ekserateer - Origin: "A ccélérateur"
What do Egyptians call the car's gas pedal? This version of the French "accélé rateur". How did that happen? No one knows.
7. Madmazeel - Origin: "Mademoiselle"
"Madmazeel" is the word for a miss and not a misses for Egyptians, it was once the French "mademoiselle". We just have to add our own Egyptian touch into everything.
8. Radeeteer - Origin: "Radiateur"
That's what Egyptians call the car's radiator, a word that was originally the French "radiateur".
9. Aleet - Origin: " élite "
Egyptians call someone who's snobby "aleet" which is originally the French " élite ". Ha! Close enough!
10. Kolonya - Origin: "Cologne"
Egyptians call men's cologne "kolonya", the word "cologne" in English was originally named after the German city Cologne.
11. Shaseh - Origin: "Chassis"
Egyptians call the car's frame "shaseh" from the French word "chassis" which means frame.
12. Mobelya - Origin: "Mobilier"
Egyptians often call house furniture "mobelya" which is originally the French "mobilier" which means furniture.
