Eid Al-Adha officially starts Thursday in the majority of Arab countries, which means that celebrations, elaborate feasts, family gatherings and some great vacation time are in order.
For young Arabs however, any Eid means one thing and one thing only, getting that beloved sum of money known as the "Eideyyah" from parents and other family members, of course.
"The essentials of Eid for me include the Eideyyah, the Eideyyah, the Eideyyah, get out of the way it's the Eideyyah."
It doesn't matter how old you are or how tradition dictates that children are supposed to get it, you will still demand it! So here are 10 things you can do to score more cash than you got last Eid.
1. Clean the entire house with your mom before Eid
If it's time for Eid, you know it's time for a massive cleanup party right before it. Make sure you're the most important member at that party, you shall be rewarded.
2. Cook iftar for your parents on the Day of Arafah
You know your parents will be fasting on the Day of Arafah, so instead of ignoring that, try cooking a nice meal for when they break their fast.
3. Be your family's personal doorman on the first day of Eid
You can sleep and pretend like your whole family won't be momentarily at your doorstep on the morning of the first day of Eid, or you can be the first one to greet them at the door.
4. Give your younger family members small Eideyyahs so your parents can reimburse you
Make a small gesture with your younger siblings and cousins and tell them to tell everyone about it, it could go a long way.
5. Exchange more Eideyyah money for more chores
Be diplomatic! Tell your parents you'll wash the dishes for two whole months after Eid if you get a better Eideyyah.
6. Volunteer as your grandparents' personal servant throughout the feast
If it's Eid Al-Adha, that means your generous grandparents will be at the big feast, so make sure you don't leave their side throughout it.
7. Bake or buy a cake for the feast as a surprise
After the meat feast is over, there will be dessert, so try baking a cake as a surprise at the end of the meal. Baking comes from the heart! Or just buy it from a store, whichever is easier.
8. Convince your parents that age doesn't matter
Remind your parents how much they love to treat you like you've never grown up, and therefore you're still a child that deserves a Eideyyah from them. Logic!
9. Or convince your parents that age DOES matter
Remind your parents that you're older now, so you need more things and therefore you have to get a better Eideyyah. It only makes sense, right?
10. Reserve all arguments and disagreements until Eid is long gone
Cleaning and cooking are all great but the best thing you can is be a model child until Eid is over. Until that day, you think your parents are right about everything!
