Khalid Mir, a British citizen from Birmingham, was on a seven hour Emirates flight from Dubai to his home city - when he got drunk and spat in the face of one of the flight attendants on board. He's now been sentenced to jail.
The incident happened last November when the 39-year-old was drinking extensively on the flight. Shortly thereafter he became aggressive towards the flight crew members and passengers.
Mir threw drinks on passengers and airline staff while cussing them out, which forced the crew to put a mask over his mouth and tie him up.
He also called the flight attendant "a dirty white."
Following the incident, Mir pleaded guilty to being drunk on an aircraft and "failing to obey a lawful command of the pilot," according to The Sun.
On March 8, Mir was sentenced to prison at Birmingham Crown Court.
Mir has over 50 previous convictions, some of which are drug-related and 25 other theft offenses. All these were committed between 1991 and 2013.
The news comes as the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) is working on new laws to deal with "unruly passengers" as there have been a number of incidents of such behavior in the UAE.
"Though the current law has some clauses to deal with such issues, we are now working on new regulations," said Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi last month, according to Arabian Business.
Mir's case wouldn't be the first disturbance reported on an Emirates flight.
In January, a passenger on a flight from Dubai to New Delhi refused to follow in-flight security rules, which forced the cabin crew to restrain him.
