Being a female member of society in the region is not easy, for reasons that would fill an entire two-story library. Tackling just one headline, let's recall the rollercoaster of having an older brother while being an Arab girl.

From dealing with a sexist society to breaking down stereotypes on the daily, we all have our feet sunk deep... Here are seven things you know are true if you grew up with an older brother:

1. It's not mom's 12 missed calls you fear most... it's his

When your mother finally gives up her role as a parent, he's the one to immediately fill in. And when you do pick up the phone... let's just say it won't be pretty.

2. He's the text book definition of overprotective

Arab brothers are protective by nature and culture, so questions about "where you've been" and "where you're going" are now part of your daily routine. You've learned to expect them, live with them, and sometimes even lie if you have to...

3. He always comments on your outfit before going out

Or your makeup... or both. If your outfit is slightly revealing, it's going to be changed before you leave. And if your parents prevent him from having that authority? Well, get ready to be stared at in disgust...

4. You weren't allowed to experience human emotions

Dating? That requires falling in love or having a crush on someone first, and you're not really allowed to have that.

Crying over something upsetting he said to you? You are over-exaggerating and being melodramatic just for attention.

Bullying? It's halal.

5. You've always felt like he's your parents' favorite child

No matter how much they deny it, the favoritism always comes out in one way or another and often hides behind the patriarchy's shadow.

"You can't do this" and "you should do that because you're a girl", meanwhile he gets to live life with no rules because he has a Y chromosome.

However, despite all the disadvantages, having an older Arab brother does come in handy sometimes...

Yes, he might have shielded you more often than not and voiced his commentary on every aspect of your life, but he's done all that out of love.

6. He can make you laugh like no one else

Despite all the annoying experiences, growing up with an older brother had its advantages. He's gathered a few tricks up his sleeve that are guaranteed to make you feel better when you're down, and you always fall for them.

7. You know you always have a shoulder to lean on

It's a blessing and a curse, but the biggest blessing is definitely the feeling of security he gives you no matter how old you both get.

Talk about true love.
