Saudi Arabia's King Salman travelled to Moscow this week, becoming the first reigning Saudi monarch to visit Russia.

The visit to the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, is widely seen as a potential turning point in Middle Eastern politics, and even the conduct of world oil markets.

More than 15 cooperation agreements worth several billions of dollars were signed, ranging from oil, military and space exploration, leading the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, to claim the visit marked the moment when Saudi-Russian relations "reached a new qualitative level".

Meanwhile, the internet has been preoccupied with the grand entrance and bling only a Saudi Royal could bring to the scene...

Below are 6 things about Saudi Arabia's historic Russia visit you may have missed:

1. King Salman brought an entourage of 1,500 people with him, booking out 2 entire luxury hotels

The entourage needed two luxury hotels to accommodate them.

The Saudi government booked two entire luxury hotels for the visit; the Ritz Carlton and the Four Seasons. The latter had to ask some guests to cancel their reservations to make room - and even moved out individuals who live in the hotel permanently.

The total cost of the reservations amounted to $3 million for 4 days.

Some of the Royals also replaced the hotel's regular staff with their own staff, people who knew exactly how they liked their coffees. King Salman is also believed to have arrived with his own furniture.

2. 800 kilos (1,764 pounds) of food was brought in to feed the entourage

According to Bloomberg, a Saudi plane travelled daily between Riyadh and Moscow in order to bring in supplies, most of which was food, such as fruits and halal meat, that was reported to have amounted to 800 kg or 1,764 pounds.

3. The famous golden escalator malfunctioned ...

Yes, those golden stairs, although pretty, not practical as they malfunctioned not even halfway down...

4. The road to the hotel...

According to The Independent, the Saudi king was taken to his hotel along a highway that was decorated with billboards advertising the visit and welcoming him to Russia in both Arabic and Russian.

5. Arms deal worth billions of dollars

According to the state's military firm, Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI), the Kingdom signed the initial agreements to purchase Russian S-400 long-range air defence systems as well as anti-tank guided missile systems, rocket launchers, and Kalashnikov rifles.

However, the Kalashnikov rifles will not be imported, but rather manufactured within Saudi Arabia.

The preliminary deal also includes the possibility of transfer of knowledge in the defense industry from Russia to Saudi Arabia.

6. Saudi Arabia is opening a new media office in Moscow, Russia

January 2018 is set to see the opening of a new media centre in Moscow. One that aims to build a bridge of communication and cultural exchange.

Based on a statement made by Dr. Awwad Al-Awwad, Saudi Arabia's Minister of Culture and Information, "the media office will promote community participation, put forward many academic discussions, expand research fields, encourage cooperation in the music domain and present cultural samples such as art galleries and patterns of inter-community interaction, in addition to promoting media and cultural exchange programs and communicating with other cultures and research centers in the host country."
