France's far-right candidate Marine Le Pen has been the talk of the town since she first announced her planned visit to Lebanon.
And now, she's making international headlines for canceling a meeting with the country's Grand Mufti Abdul Latif Derian on Tuesday after refusing to wear a headscarf.
A spokesperson for the Mufti said that Le Pen had been informed prior to the meeting of the headscarf requirements -- a detail that went overlooked.
"You can pass on my respects to the Grand Mufti, but I will not cover myself up," she said, according to CNN.
Her refusal goes against the rules of Dar al-Fatwa, Lebanon's highest Sunni authority. The government institution, created in 1922, is charged with issuing legal rulings specific to the Sunni community, administering religious schools, and overseeing mosques.
Prior to her arrival, hundreds of Lebanese signed a petition against the visit altogether. Others voiced their love and support by starting a fan page for her.
Of course, there are those who are known to add humor to every situation ... and couldn't help but give Le Pen a taste of it.
1. Photoshopping Le Pen in a headscarf in front of Beirut's iconic al-Amin mosque
2. "It's OK I lowered my gaze"
3. "This is all what I will say about Marine Le Pen, the hijab, and the Mufti"
4. Remembering Feb 21 as "Mar Marine" Day
5. Suggesting La Pen change her last name ... for OCD rhymers
6. Playing dodge the hijab with Marine Le Pen ...
Lebanon's Grand Mufti is not as strict as some think
In 2016, the Grand Mufti met with Poland's Deputy Foreign Minister H.E. Joanna Wronecka at the invitation of Tomasz Miśkiewicz, the Mufti of the Muslim Religious Association in Poland and President of the Highest Muslim Council. Wronecka was not wearing a headscarf.
However, the meeting took place in Poland and not in Lebanon's Dar Al-Fatwa, which adheres to strict rules.
Le Pen's visit marked the National Front leader's first official meeting with a foreign head of state.
Many have said Le Pen made the visit in an effort to shore up international exposure in the lead up to the election.
There are thousands of French citizens residing in Lebanon. Le Pen has positioned herself as anti-immigration, anti-EU, pro-President Bashar Assad in Syria and is known for Islamophobic statements.
She currently is favored to win the first round of voting in the French election later this year, but is not expected to win in the run-off.
