Growing up in Dubai is pretty much the same as growing up anywhere else.
Okay, I’m lying – it really isn’t.
While you may think Lamborghini police cars and tall buildings is what we associate with home, there is so much more to the city than the glitz-and-glam that you might see in the media. Here are four things every Dubai native can relate to, wherever they are in the Middle East now.
1. Chai Karak
This tea has kept us warm on many winter evenings (which are probably no where near as cold as yours, but we can pretend). Our motto: Chai karak today, chai karak tomorrow, chai karak everyday.
2. We call our cab drivers "Boss."
And we have absolutely no idea why.
3. The most dreaded question is, "Where are you from?"
Proceed to explain: "I’m a quarter Tunisian, a quarter Lebanese, a quarter Greek and a quarter Thai, but I have a Canadian passport and grew up in Dubai." This is totally normal.
4. The second-most dreaded questions is, "What is that? Is it legal?"
