Fifteen years ago, one of modern history's most inspirational leaders, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, died, leaving behind a legacy to be cherished forever.
Every year since then, the UAE has paid tribute to Sheikh Zayed on the 19th day of Ramadan, which falls on May 24 this year. Sheikh Zayed envisioned and eventually transformed the future of the UAE over his 33-year leadership. Having been the ruler of Abu Dhabi from 1996 and the President of the UAE since its founding in 1971, Sheikh Zayed's visionary mind is still talked about till this day.
His humanitarian work rings in the minds of those living today, and the tributes being made on his 15th death anniversary is proof.
"He was our father before being our leader"
"A model for humanitarian action"
"Our greatest pride"
"A milestone in the history of the UAE"
"You weren't just the leader of my people, but of all Arabs"
Named after his grandfather, Sheikh Zayed grew up in a family of leaders who dedicated their lives to the Emirati people and the improvement of the nation.
During his youthful years, Sheikh Zayed traveled extensively to acquaint himself with both the country and his people. In the heart of the desert, he lived among Bedouins, discovered the joys of falconry, and learned to appreciate the land.
Sheikh Zayed always emphasized that real wealth is not material gain, but his investment in people who would eventually build the future of the nation. Health, education, and social welfare sectors improved drastically under his leadership and so did the economy. Sheikh Zayed used oil revenues to further advance the UAE and build a strong economy.
