Egypt today is a country of sugar shortages, a plummeting pound, a crackdown on activists and journalists, and security breaches. Too many will argue that the most populous Arab country is worse off today than it was before January 25, 2011, that fateful day when Egypt's totalitarian ruler Hosni Mubarak was forced out of power by massive country-wide protests. 

While that may be true, the rest of us Arabs are hard-pressed to imagine a world without that day. 

The odds were stacked against the Egyptian people, and they have not yet seen the fruit of their bravery. Still, we salute them. At the height of their fight for democracy, we sat glued to our television sets, feeling moved to our core.
