A school trip to an amusement park in Saudi Arabia's capital city Riyadh ended in horror after 14 students fell from a roller coaster earlier last week.
According to local news reports, the incident left ten high school girls injured and in hospital, while four others were treated for minor injuries on the spot after falling from the 8-meter high thrill ride.
Speaking to Saudi news outlets, one of the victims said most roller coasters in the park looked undermaintained and dangerous.
A teacher who was overseeing the trip added that the park's employees refused to call rescue teams in the wake of the incident.
Following the accident, Saudi authorities announced the closure of the amusement park and the launch of an official investigation into the matter.
The news made the rounds on Saudi Twitter
In the days after the accident, many commented on it via social media, calling on authorities to ensure the safety of children at amusement parks across the kingdom.
People were left shocked
"Oh God!"
Others were angry
"Where are those responsible or are they waiting for a catastrophe to happen?"
And upset...
"Saudi civil defense workers should make continuous visits to all amusement parks in the country and ensure that they are following proper maintenance procedures. If you go to amusement parks inside malls you'd be shocked by the amount of negligence when it comes to these things. They wait until it's too late to make changes."
"Where are those responsible for this amusement park?"
"Why don't they maintain these rides monthly? I went on one recently and it wasn't safe, I am never going on it again."
Many thought the action taken in the wake of the incident wasn't enough
"Is the closure of this amusement park for a day and re-opening it on Thursday fair? Is it enough when it comes to people's safety?"
