In the Arab world, getting engaged is almost as important as getting married. The occasion is usually celebrated in style with a big party and a whole lot of zlagheet and aabalkon.
But with the increasing difficulty of finding suitable, marriage material men and overcoming other obstacles (financial, social, emotional), you can’t blame Arab girls for getting a little bit too excited about getting engaged and finally putting a ring on it.
Here are 14 things most Arab girls are guilty of doing when they finally get engaged:
1. Adding “taken by @PrinceMajed” to her Instagram bio… and probably forcing her fiancé to add the same nauseating line.
2. Avoid telling her distant friends about the engagement till after she wears the ring to protect herself from the evil eye and envy.
3. Stuffing her fiancés name in every single conversation even if it doesn’t make any sense.
Example: “Do you want to go shopping? Majed totally likes shopping with me BTW!”
4. Posting an engagement ring selfie with the ever so cliché caption: “I said yes!”
5. Completely ignore mentioning her male friends in front of her fiancé or stressing each time that they are all like her "little brother."
6. Trying her best to be the shyest girl ever in front of her soon to be mother in law and flashing her best timid pearly white smile.
7. Updating her Facebook page with a picture of her and her fiancé laughing their heads off while leaning against a tree…
The photo will be even more perfect if it looks like it was “spontaneously” caught off guard.
8. Adding her fiancé’s entire clan on Facebook and leaving comments such as “you look so beautiful auntie Huda” or “so cute mashallah” on their photos.
9. Making a toe-curling video shoot of her fiancé chasing her in a field of wheat stalks then playing it in slow motion at their engagement party.
10. Casually mentioning her wedding plans in conversations with her BFFs…
And by casually I mean 6000 times a day!
