Eid al-Adha aka "feast of the sacrifice" is considered to be the holiest of the major Muslim holidays, honoring Prophet Ibrahim's commitment to the faith and willingness to sacrifice his own son, Ismail.

According to scripture, and at the very last moment before Ibrahim went to sacrifice his son, God placed a ram there to be slaughtered instead. To re-enact the story, Muslims slaughter a sheep, goat, cow or camel and give away the meat to the poor.
