On Saturday, January 17 th, Cairo set the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest plate of koshary . Prepared by the well renowned Koshary restaurant, Abo Tarek, this traditional Egyptian dish features rice, lentils and pasta mixed together, topped with spicy tomato sauce and fried onions.
Over 6,000 people attended the Koshary Festival. The event was organized by the start up Engezni, a food ordering app which acts like Instagram, only for food.
After four hours of preparation, the Koshary serving weighed 6,350 kilograms. It was spread across a ten meter squared container for attendees to share. Let's say yum, all together now.
Spanning across the entire day, thousands of Cairenes spent their day at the Hurreyya Garden in Zamalek, Cairo, enjoying the day-long Koshary Festival.
The festival was lively, featuring 70 booths that offered between food, clothes and accessories.
To wrap up the day, CairoKee rocked the stage to a crowd that couldn’t be more enthusiastic. The night finally topped off with fireworks.
Amaa' Samir, an attendee, told Daily News Egypt that, “Koshary is one of the things that makes Egypt unique, so having an event like this would prettify the image of Egypt outside the country...Tourists always come to try koshary in Egypt, it’s one of the things we know how to do the best.”
Sounds like a lot of fun, although we aren't too sure if 6,350 kilograms of Koshary is the most appetizing thing we've ever heard of in our life. Or 10,452 kilograms of hummus, a Guinness World Record that was set by Lebanon in 2010. Cheers for sharing germs with thousands of strangers.
